Spray Tan Preparation Guide
Follow these 3 Steps for a Perfect Spray Tan©!
STEP ONE: 2-3 Days Before Your Tan
Pause Your Skincare Routine
Take a break from products with exfoliating properties, including:
- Topical acne medications
- AHAs, BHAs, glycolic acid
- Niacinamide, retinol
- Salicylic acid, SLS
- Urea, vitamin C
Why? These products dry out your skin and can cause a patchy, uneven tan. Taking a break allows your skin to restore balance and create an even canvas.
Hydrate & Moisturize
- Moisturize twice daily
- Drink plenty of water
- The more hydrated your skin is, the better your tan will look
STEP TWO: 1-2 Days Before Your Tan
Complete All Spa Treatments
Schedule these services 1-2 days before your appointment:
- Lash extensions/lifts
- Brow tints
- Facials
- Manicures/pedicures
- Hair appointments
- Massages
- Threading, waxing, sugaring
Important: Waxing should be done 2 days prior to allow skin time to heal.
Check Your Products
Review your body wash, lotions, oils, and soaps. Many products (including natural brands) contain spray tan-unfriendly ingredients like:
- Mineral oil
- Fragrances
- Alcohols
- Harsh exfoliants
These can strip away your tan, causing uneven fading + shorter lifespan.
STEP THREE: 18-24 Hours Before Your Tan
The Golden Rule: Shower, Shave, Exfoliate
Never prep right before your appointment!
- Shower first
- Shave second
- Exfoliate last
How to Exfoliate
Best option: Use an exfoliating glove or mitt
Alternative: Make a paste with baking soda and water. At the end of your shower, wipe your entire body from head to toe, then rinse well.
Why Exfoliate 24 Hours Early?
- Removes dead skin cells that cause blotchy tans
- Prepares skin to absorb tanning solution evenly
- Your skin loses amino acids during exfoliation and needs 24 hours to rebuild them
- DHA (the active tanning ingredient) reacts with these amino acids to create your tan
DAY OF: 30 Minutes to 1 Hour Before
Final Prep
- Do not shower again
- Remove makeup and deodorant
- Wipe body with a warm (not hot) washcloth
- Put hair up and off neck/face
- Remove all jewelry
- Bring a towel for your car seat
